Winter storage tips
With the Easter holidays already a distant memory, it’s the perfect time to take a look at readying our homes for winter, which is very much knocking at the door.
There are a number of ways in which self storage can be truly beneficial over winter so here are our top tips for winter storage.
Summer gardening tools
A cold and possibly damp garden shed is the worst possible place to keep your expensive lawnmower, as frost and dust are no friends to electrical or mechanical devices.
Once you cut the lawn or trimmed the hedge for the last time, give your tools a thorough clean (follow our tips here) and move them into your storage unit before those cold and damp nights really settle in. The cost of servicing or replacing your tools and gardening equipment could be higher than you think.
Store your summer clothes
With more and more of us living in smaller homes, particularly inner city apartments, one of the most common complaints is the lack of closet space. Trying to prise your favourite top out of the cramped clothing sandwich that is your closet is not ideal. That’s why finding somewhere else to store your off-season clothing is a great idea. It instantly halves the number of items in your closet.
Storing summer clothes in a storage unit is a smart move because they’re clean, dry and accessible whenever you want. You can even buy cardboard clothing boxes with built-in hangers to keep your clothes in perfect shape during storage. Boat and watersports storage
Many owners only take out their boats and jet skis to enjoy the exhilaration of the open waters during summer, leaving them under wraps for the best part of six months. This leaves them vulnerable to the weather, and vulnerable to theft.
Securely storing your expensive recreational vehicles in a guarded facility over winter makes a lot of sense. Facilities like Wilson Storage are far safer than your own garage. They’re under 24/7 monitored security, clean and dry. We have plenty of handy boat storage tips here.
The winter clearcut
Winter is, of course, a season when many of us spend more time indoors. That’s why having a clean and clutter-free home is even more important than perhaps it might be during summer.
With less to do outdoors, winter is the perfect time to have a thorough clearcut of your home and put into storage those spare chairs, boxes and kid’s toys you’ve been meaning to get out of the way since Christmas. Take out a small storage unit, make a plan and see what a difference it makes to have space to snuggle down and relax in.
Preparing to move
With a large number of property sales occurring towards the back end of summer, many settlement periods occur during winter. If you plan to make your move during this time it could be incredibly useful to have storage all sorted out.
If you are downsizing, space can be all-important, so consider the amount of storage you’ll need in the short term whilst you plan your move properly. This can be particularly useful if you’re decided about where some of your larger possessions will go in your new home. Popping them into storage is a great stop gap, allowing you to plan your new space more freely.
