How To Get Friends To Help You Move
One of the greatest tests of friendship comes directly after the phrase “Hey, would you mind helping me move?”
Spending an entire day lifting heavy things that belong to someone else is not on too many bucket lists.
Nevertheless, there are some ways to ensure that your moving day is not the last day of a friendship. In fact, if planned properly, this can actually be a way of building your ‘circle of trust.’
1. DON’T UNDERSELL THE JOB
Have you ever turned up to help someone out and what you thought was going to be a relatively manageable favour, turned into hours of hard labour?
Nothing will unearth cracks in a friendship like not providing a proper picture of what to expect, just because you didn’t want them to say ‘no.’
2. BE ORGANISED
Don’t wait until everyone has gathered on the day to then lead with, “Right, what should we do first?”
Your friends are doing you a favour, so they shouldn’t have to do the thinking for you as well. Write down a comprehensive list of everything that needs to be achieved and allocate time and people against it. Think about who out of your friendship circle has specialist skills that might be more effective performing particular tasks.
3. FEED AND WATER THEM
Crucial! To keep your friends happy and motivated make sure you nail the catering – snacks, lunch/dinner, soft drinks, beer, wine etc. This will enforce the perception that you’re giving them something back in return for their help.
All in all, having people help you move shouldn’t have to test the bonds of friendship. Be upfront, plan ahead, look after them on the day and the experience can be positive for all. Besides, these are the same friends that will probably break something at the housewarming party anyway!
