The Health Benefits of Decluttering

Decluttering is a hot topic currently. It’s become a cornerstone of domestic life and interior design. It also has several proven health benefits. Because we’re in the storage business, we know the importance of minimising clutter. You could say we’re also in the decluttering business. This is a guide to unlocking some of the health benefits of decluttering and the importance of storing the right things away.

Reduces stress and anxiety:

A very busy library full of books everywhere.

Happy home, happy life. Taking clutter out of life makes you feel less overwhelmed. I’m sure we can all agree with that. It’s backed by facts too. Having a clean house can help you directly reduce feelings of anxiety. A study published in the journal, Mindfulness, found that people who were mindful when washing dishes—reported a 27% reduction in nervousness, along with a 25% improvement in “mental inspiration”.

Increases productivity:

Attention is a hard thing to come by these days. Clutter competes for attention, making it harder to focus. Decluttering enhances concentration and productivity by reducing overstimulation. Neuropsychisatist Diane Stoller puts it perfectly, “Clutter is a form of visual distraction, which increases cognitive overload and can reduce working memory. If your space is unorganised and filled with clutter it can be difficult to focus or concentrate”. Further to this, research shows people are less distracted, more productive, and better able to process information in an uncluttered and organised work area.

Decluttering boosts your mood:

A tidy space promotes happiness and optimism. It seems like a small thing to do to get a lot out of it. Several studies display a connection between disorganisation, clutter, and mental health conditions, including, depression, anxiety, and stress. Messy environments can cause frustration, helplessness, and feeling overwhelmed.

Encourages healthy habits:

Maintaining a decluttered home helps promote healthy habits. According to a study by Nicole Keith, PhD, a research scientist and professor at Indiana University, people with clean houses tend to be healthier than those with messy or cluttered homes. A clean home was even indicated to be associated with better health than the walkability of a neighbourhood.

Improves self-esteem:

Excessive clutter often leads to feelings of shame, hopelessness, and guilt. The feelings can spiral, making it difficult to find the motivation to address the clutter. According to Psychology Today, decluttering can increase self-worth, create healthy habits, and boost productivity. A little bit of decluttering can go a long way.
