What you need to know when you move out of your student residence

It’s nearly the end of the year, which means you’ve finished your exams and you’re ready to go home and celebrate Christmas with the family. One problem — you have to move everything out of your student residence until the new university year starts. Not only is this a stressful thing to do on your own, but it’s also hard to work out where you can store all your things. We’ve made things easier for you by compiling a list of tips for packing up your room.

Before you begin

It can be tempting to leave things to the last minute, especially if you’re pressed for time. But it is essential to have everything you need before you start packing.

Make sure you have all the packing essentials on hand. This includes butchers paper, packing tape, scissors, a permanent marker and, most importantly, boxes. Have a look at our Wilson Storage box shop. We have 50% off boxes and packaging items when you buy in-store*.

When you pack

Organisation is the key to a smooth move — and ensures unpacking things at the other end is an easy process.

Mark boxes with item descriptions. If there’s something important in the box, don’t just write ‘homewares’, list the items that you value instead. We’re not saying you need to note down individual cutlery items, but if you have a favourite mug, write it on the box. This way, when you’re in the process of unpacking, you’ll be able to find your favourite things with ease.

Keep a small suitcase, backpack or duffel bag reserved as your overnight bag and store all the things you’ll need during the move in there. This can be things like your daily toiletries, a change of clothes, pyjamas, etc.

And always remember this golden rule: never put too many heavy items in one box. Balance books out with stationary or DVDs, otherwise the box can break as you’re carrying it.

Storing options

The student residence you’re leaving is unlikely to have storage space for you to leave your belongings, so you’ll have to look for alternatives. You can ask friends and family but if everyone is lacking space (especially if your parents have downsized since you moved out) then your best option would be to look at self-storage units.

At Wilson Storage, we’re offering students 10% off any sized storage units at the Rowville and Mt Waverly stores if you hire before December 31st 2018*. The self-storage units are safe and secure — between regular night patrols and CCTV footage, your belongings are protected around-the-clock. You can even hire our move-in van for free, making your move stress-free.

Now that you know these handy tips, get in contact with Wilson Storage to find out more about our self-storage unit prices and store locations.
